ROCKIES 3, DIAMONDBACKS 0

-

At Salt River Fields, Friday, February 23

At the plate: 2B Ketel Marte led off the Diamondbacks’ Cactus League season with a single through the left side, then drew a walk in his second trip to the plate. LF Joc Pederson walked in both of his plate appearances, the first of them coming against a left-handed pitcher. The Diamondbacks managed just five hits and three walks.

On the mound: LHP Tommy Henry, a candidate for the final rotation spot, turned in two sharp innings, allowing just a soft single to center while striking out three. The outing was Henry’s first in a game environment since he went down with elbow issues last July. “I had a little bit of pregame jitters, which felt good,” Henry said. “That’s always fun.” Henry said he felt good about some mechanical changes he made in the offseason with his hips and lower half.

Extra bases: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez, the club’s top offseason addition and projected No. 3 starter, pitched in a simulated game on the backfields in the late morning, striking out four of the six batters he faced on 28 pitches. His only blemish was a six-pitch walk to RF Corbin Carroll. “He’s just so good at landing pitches,” manager Torey Lovullo said of Rodriguez. “He is a pitch maker. He can drive pitches on both sides of the plate. I watched him throw two fastballs down and in to Corbin Carroll, pretty much dotted up. Your timing has to really good when you’re doing something like that.” In the game against the Rockies, 2B Blaze Alexander started a double play in the fifth, slipping after fielding a sharp grounder from RF Jordan Beck before getting to his feet, beating the runner to the second base bag and firing a strike to first.

Next game, Saturday, February 24: Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson vs. Rockies RHP Noah Davis, 1:10 p.m., Salt River Fields.
