Chandler, Desert Edge students receive honors

Chandler track and field athlete S’Niyah Cade and Desert Edge track and field athlete Jamar Beal-Goines have been chosen as this week’s Arizona Republic high school athletes of the week, in weekly polls posted on March 18, sponsored by Diamond Kitchen & Bath and posted on azcentral.com.

Cade was nominated for the girls’ honor after running 11.87 seconds in the 100 meters at the Rattler Booster Invite, which is a state-leading time. Also nominated were Chandler Basha softball player Kendall Bragg, who went 15 for 17 last week with eight RBIs and two home runs as the Bears went 4-0-1, and Queen Creek softball player Corie Shull, who went 8 for 10 with 4 RBIs and two home runs as the Bulldogs won by a combined score of 20-2 in games against Phoenix Xavier Prep and Chandler Arizona College Prep.

In the boys poll, Jamar Beal-Goines was nominated after recording a personal best in the 100 meters at the Rattler Booster Invite, running a new state lead of 10.59. Also nominated were Phoenix Brophy Prep tennis player Tyler Woo, who won both of his singles matches last week, taking down Chandler Basha’s Porter Anderson 6-0, 6-0 and Tucson Catalina Foothills’ Santiago Lietzau 6-1, 6-1 while also winning both of his double matches; and Chandler Hamilton baseball player Drew Rogers, who went 9 for 12 with two doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs to lead Hamilton to its first Boras Classic championsh­ip.
