Karl’s Quality Bakery in Sunnyslope is closing after 30 years at the end of March.

The owner, Christine Boerner, announced in an Instagram post dated March 25: “Auf Wiedersehen and thank you for 30 years. It Has been an extraordinary journey filled with the aroma of love and the sweetness of shared moments. While our ovens may cool, the warmth of our bakery will forever linger in the hearts and taste buds of those we’ve had the honor to serve. With Love and Butter Always, the Karl’s family.”

The bakery was originally opened at the corner of Seventh and Dunlap avenues in 1994 by Karl Boerner, who emigrated from Germany.

After 20 years, Karl’s daughter, Christine, who had worked at the shop as a child and hated baking, took over the bakery, moving it to the current location at the corner of Central and Dunlap avenues. She studied architecture before falling in love with chocolate and switching careers to train as a chocolatier and pastry chef in Switzerland.

Loyal customers responded with mixed emotions

Chef Silvana Esparza, who recently announced her restaurant’s impending closure, commented: “Thank you. We should celebrate together. Congratulations.” Christine replied: “you got it! That sounds like a good time!”

@nicholekmayberry wrote: “We lived on the street behind your Dunlap location when I was growing up. My sister @brittneyslayberry and I always used to ride our kick scooters before school to buy a cookie or on special occasions. This year is my 30th birthday and I can’t help but feel this is such a beautiful way to close out the end of this chapter of life. Thank you so much for all you have done for the community. @karls_bakery will always hold a special place in my childhood memories. ♥”

Boerner responded: “one of my favorite memories is food memories, we have raised many neighborhood kids on our cookies ! ♥”

What’s next for the bakery

According to the Instagram, another family-owned bakery is taking over the space.
