QB Sims leaving Alabama program

Alabama quarterbac­k Phillip Sims is transferri­ng after the spring semester.

Sims said in a statement released Friday by the university that supporting his family in Virginia “needs to be my priority right now.” Sims said he hopes to continue his playing career but didn’t mention a possible destinatio­n.

The third-year sophomore was one of the nation’s most highly touted quarterbac­k prospects out of Chesapeake, Va., but lost a battle with A. J. Mccarron for the starting job early last season. Mccarron led the Crimson Tide to a national title and has two more years of eligibilit­y.

Sims played in eight games, completing 64.3 percent of his passes for 163 yards with no touchdowns and two intercepti­ons.

LSU will add new seats to Tiger Stadium in a south end zone expansion that will near the football stadium’s capacity to 100,000 and make it among the largest university stadiums in the SEC and across the nation.

The Board of Supervisor­s backed the proposal Friday without objection, approving a $100 million constructi­on plan that includes the stadium enlargemen­t and other athletic facility projects.

The plans include adding 60 suites, approximat­ely 3,000 club seats and general seating for up to another 1,500 people above the existing south end zone seats for Death

Valley.

Several SMU basketball players were informed by new coach Larry Brown that they will not remain on the team.

Athletic director Steve Orsini said Brown, the Hall of Fame coach hired last week, conducted an evaluation of the roster and held individual meetings with players. While not saying how many or which players wouldn’t stay on the team, Orsini referred to “these young men” in his statement released by the school.

“During each meeting, there was honest, straight-forward discussion about the future of the program,” Orsini said. “No player was told his scholarshi­p would not be renewed.”

Auburn dismissed two basketball players and suspended a third indefinite­ly.

Coach Tony Barbee said Cedrick Mcafee and Josh Langford were kicked off the team for violating team rules and Noel Johnson, from Fayettevil­le, was suspended.

Langford averaged 5.2 points and 2.1 rebounds as a sophomore. Mcafee was redshirted last season.

Johnson is a Clemson transfer who played in 19 games and started three last season after becoming eligible following the fall semester. He averaged 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds.

Wisconsin approved a five-year contract extension for basketball coach Bo Ryan, who has taken the Badgers to the round of 16 the past two seasons. The Athletic Board approved the deal. Ryan’s contract will now run through 2017. Terms were not disclosed. ... Marquette granted sophomore Jamail Jones, a 6foot-6 forward from Atlanta, a release from his scholarshi­p. Jones averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds per game in two seasons.
