Irish leader skips men-only dinner
Ireland’s deputy prime minister, visiting the U.S. during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, said Saturday he skipped a trip to Savannah, home of the largest and oldest St. Pat’s parade in the American South, to avoid a dinner where only men are allowed. Eamon Gilmore instead made stops in Atlanta and New Orleans, telling the Irish Times a visit to Georgia’s oldest city would have come with the expectation he attend the annual dinner of the Hibernian Society of Savannah, a private event open only to men. William H. Bruggeman, president of the group, said it’s the first time he’s heard of any government official — Irish or American — avoiding the dinner because it excludes women. gletail, 28, had been near the Big Sioux River river Thursday evening when he saw 6-year-old Garrett Martin Wallace either fall into the frothing water or become obscured by the gathering foam. Garrett’s 16-year-old sister had jumped in to save the boy and Eagletail followed. The boy later emerged from the river and was uninjured. Eagletail’s body was found about 100 feet from where the body of Madison Leigh Wallace was discovered Friday.
