Teixeira could be out two months

-

Mark Teixeira says he has a partially torn tendon sheath in his right wrist and didn’t rule out missing up to two months of the regular season.

The first baseman rejoined the New York Yankees at spring training Sunday after getting hurt March 5 while with the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic. The injury initially was announced as a strained wrist.

Teixeira plans to start limited baseball drills in about a week and is optimistic that surgery will not be necessary.

He was hurt while swinging a weighted bat left-handed off a tee in an indoor cage during pregame warmups with the U.S. at the World Baseball Classic. The Yankees have said Teixeira will be out until at least May.

Left-hander Andy Pettitte and closer Mariano Rivera are slated to take part in minor league games today, an off day for the Yankees.

New York released Matt Diaz, signed as a minor league free agent during the offseason to compete for an extra outfield spot. The decision to release Diaz came after the Yankees signed outfielders Ben Francisco and Brennan Boesch in the past week.

Dodgers: Zack Greinke threw off a mound Sunday for the first time since the right-hander was shut down March 11 with inflammation in his right elbow. He threw 38 pitches and said he felt good. The session was his first since his right elbow was injected in Los Angeles with plasma rich in platelets.

Mets: David Wright wanted to make it clear that playing in the World Baseball Classic had nothing to do with the rib injury he sustained that could cause him to miss opening day. He explained that “you can get hurt in spring training, you can get hurt before spring training,” and that he didn’t get hurt because of the tournament. Wright said he is unsure of whether he will be able to play on April 1 in the season opener. Wright strained an intercostal muscle in his rib cage while working out in Arizona.

Phillies: Roy Halladay didn’t feel well, and it had little to do with his pitching. The two-time Cy Young Award winner left after one inning Sunday, forced out of a game against Baltimore because of a stomach virus. “He was throwing up a little bit,” manager Charlie Manuel said. “He threw up after he came out after the first inning. He was sick before (the game), but he’s hardheaded. He wanted to pitch, and he threw up and we took him out of the game.”

Red Sox: Jon Lester retired 18 consecutive batters against Tampa Bay Sunday as he continued to prepare for an apparent opening day start.

Twins: Manager Ron Gardenhire said catcher Joe Mauer, who returned from the World Baseball Classic, would play today against Miami.
