Chiefs cut Flowers; Clowney has hernia

The Chiefs finally have some much-needed salary cap space, and an opening at cornerback, too.

Kansas City released Brandon Flowers on Friday after three weeks of voluntary workouts in which the former starter was conspicuou­sly absent. Flowers, who started 87 of the 88 games he played over six seasons, was due to make $5.25 million in his final contract season.

Texans: No. 1 overall pick DE Jadeveon Clowney had sports hernia surgery, and will be ready for training camp, which begins in late July.

Noteworthy: The Lions cut CB Chris Houston one year into his $25 million, five-year contract, and signed first-round pick TE Eric Ebron to a four-year contract. ... The Titans agreed to terms with WR Rico Richardson and waived LB James Gayle. ... Giants LB Jon Beason broke a bone in his right foot and is expected to miss most of training camp. ... The Vikings signed WR Josh Cooper.

Queen’s Club: Spanish left-hander Feliciano Lopez upset second-seeded Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-6 (7) to reach the grass-court semifinals in London. Top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, Radek Stepanek and Grigor Dimitrov also advanced.

Aegon Classic: Former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic beat Klara Koukalova 6-1, 6-4 to reach the semifinals in Birmingham, England. Casey Dellacqua, Zhang Shuai and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova also moved on.

Gerry Weber Open: Roger Federer, Philipp Kohlschrei­ber, Alejandro Falla and Kei Nishikori reached the semifinals in Halle, Germany.
