School bus overturns in Columbia County

A school bus monitor was injured and a 6-yearold student shaken up when a school bus rolled onto its side Thursday afternoon as its driver tried to avoid hitting a deer in Columbia County.

According to Columbia County sheriff ’s Capt. Sharif Chochol, emergency management technician­s said the Lewiston Elementary student, who was not identified, did not appear injured.

Bus monitor Carla Dorsey was taken by ambulance to a hospital, but her injuries did not appear life-threatenin­g, police said.

Longtime Columbia County school bus driver Becky Brickhouse was not injured in the 3:45 p.m. accident on William Few Parkway. A database by the Augusta Chronicle on deer/vehicle collisions in the metro area showed 19 such accidents on that roadway from 2013 through Oct. 27, 2014.
