Grant funds used to improve transit buses

Almost a million dollars has been awarded to an Atlantabased nonprofit working to turn transit buses into mobile generators.

The Center for Transportation and the Environment, which focuses on sustainable transportation and energy technologies, received a $995,098 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, according to an announcement on Thursday.

The money will be used to develop and deploy a Bus Exportable Power System. The system would allow existing transit buses to export power using their hybrid propulsion systems. That capability would be especially useful during an emergency response.

The Center was one of 13 organizations in nine states to receive a share of $29 million in grant funding through the Federal Transit Administration’s Innovative Safety, Resiliency, and All-Hazards Emergency Response and Recovery Demonstration funding opportunity.
