Sidewalk, bridge projects approved

The Johns Creek City Council is moving ahead with a possible bridge restoratio­n project that would connect it with its neighbor to the north.

The council Monday night signed off on an intergover­nmental agreement with Fulton and Gwinnett counties, the city of Duluth and the National Park Service to start planning on a multi-use trail across the Chattahooc­hee River at the old Rogers Bridge. The project would include restoratio­n of the structure that’s more than 100 years old.

Some $500,000 in federal funding will be sought, with a $100,000 local match.

Council members also approved a $303,000 contract with Glosson Enterprise­s for installati­on of a half-mile stretch of sidewalk on Alvin Road between Haynes Bridge Road and Switchbark Lane. ed June 30 shows the city of Woodstock’s financial status has improved.

Certified Public Accountant James Whitaker noted improvemen­ts in such areas as city revenues and net income in a report to the city council Monday night. He said the balance in the city’s general fund, its chief operating fund, has jumped to $2,083,000. He said the city had made great strides in the past two of three years, after reporting a negative general fund balance in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.

Whitaker attributed that both to better accounting controls, and to better training of city financial staff.

The city’s net position increased just over $5 million to some $34.9 million last year, with revenues increasing more than $3.7 million to $31.5 million while expenses totaled some $26.4 million, he added. Officials said that Emmett Rushin will remain closed until at least Wednesday morning while repairs are being made. In the meantime, the exit onto Roswell Area Park Drive near the maintenanc­e shop and the physical center will become a two-way road to handle traffic.
