Candy lore has it that Turkish Taffy came about by accident around 1912, in New York, when a batch of marshmallow got side-tracked by the addition of too many egg whites. Candy maker Herman Herer transformed his sweet mistake into Turkish Taffy, which became the chewy candy that continues to enjoy dedicated fans. You’ll find the large bars of Turkish Taffy for $1.22 each at Richard’s Variety Store, 931 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, 404-879-9877. The store stocks vanilla, banana and wild cherry.

I am new to the Atlanta area, and still have my house on Bainbridge Island, Washington. At my house, I have a pasta cooker. It is a big pot with a smaller one as an insert with drain holes in the bottom. I fill the big pot with water, place the insert in the pot, and add pasta when the water boils, then cover. The pasta eventually becomes soft and cooked. When it’s done, the smaller one is removed and the water drained out. I cannot locate one in Atlanta. Do you have a suggestion? Thanks. — J.B. One insert is for cooking pasta, and the other is ideal for steaming vegetables. It’s also priced at $99.95.
