Business students honored

■ Alpharetta High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter sent 61 students to compete at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Chicago. Twenty-eight made the stage as top 10 finalists in 19 different events. Alpharetta had four first-place finishes: Andrew Fu for business calculatio­ns; Josh Seides and Gavin Ng for community service project; Rohan Raina, Jeffrey Zhang and Bennett Zhu for computer gaming and simulation programmin­g; and Apurva Gundaria, who won the prestigiou­s Future Business Leader award. It was only the second time a Georgia high school has won this many awards. The number of students from Alpharetta High School competing and winning both set records for Georgia FBLA.

■ These Atlanta-area students won top awards at the recent SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, where more than 6,000 high school and college students competed in 100 occupation­al and leadership events. Michael Harris and Cory Way from Atlanta Technical College won the college silver medal in digital cinema production; Thelma Clark-Thomas from Georgia Piedmont Technical College won the college gold medal in employment applicatio­n process; Donnell Williams, William Roblero and Angel Leon from Cross Keys High School in Atlanta won the high school gold medal in occupation­al health and safety – single; Rosa Bello-Aguilera from Cross Keys won the high school bronze medal in outstandin­g chapter; and Peterson Cheridor, Sakima Cauthen and Melinda Johnson from Georgia Piedmont Technical College won the college bronze medal in career pathways, business, management and technology.

■ Three students received awards at the College of Arts and Sciences 2015 Honors Ceremony at Georgia State University. Manuel Solomon of Atlanta received the Anne M. Eaton Endowed Scholarshi­p, which recognizes an outstandin­g gerontolog­y graduate student, with special preference given to students age 40 or older. The scholarshi­p honors alumna Anne Eaton, who was a part of the first class of gerontolog­y graduates in 1977. Victoria Lang of Newnan received the George Greiff Scholarshi­p, given to a journalism undergradu­ate or graduate student in honor of former Georgia State journalism professor George Greiff. Kelsey Schwarz of Atlanta received the Jacqueline Boles Graduate Teaching Fellowship, which recognizes outstandin­g sociology graduate instructor­s and is in honor of Jackie Boles, a sociology faculty member of more than 30 years.
