Jays get top starter Price

Rotation bolstered as Toronto sends prospects to Tigers.

The Toronto Blue Jays got a No. 1 starter for their rotation Thursday, acquiring left-hander David Price from Detroit.

Armed with the No. 1 offense in the majors and days after bringing All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on board, the Blue Jays got Price by parting with their No. 1 prospect, left-hander Daniel Norris.

Norris is ranked the No. 15 prospect in baseball and was a second-round pick in 2011. Norris, 22, had 116 strikeouts in 1121/3 innings the past two seasons in Triple A.

In addition to Norris, the agreement calls for the Blue Jays to send two other left-handed pitchers to the Tigers: Jairo Labourt and Matt Boyd.

Price is in the final year of his contract with the Tigers, who landed Price in a deadline deal with Tampa Bay in July 2014. He turns 30 next month.

Price has a 2.53 ERA in 21 starts this season and was 13-8 in 32 starts over parts of two seasons with the Tigers.

Astros: The push for postseason continued as Houston acquired twotime All-Star outfielder Carlos Gomez from the Brewers a day after a deal to send him to the Mets fell through.

Houston, which also got right-hander Mike Fiers, sent four prospects to Milwaukee: left-hander Josh Hader, right-hander Adrian Houser and outfielders Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin confirmed the proposed deal Wednesday would have sent Gomez to the Mets for infielder Wilmer Flores and injured pitcher Zack Wheeler. Reports indicated the deal may have fallen through because of concerns that Gomez may have a hip injury, but the Brewers and agent Scott Boras said there is no such problem.

Dodgers: Los Angeles added starting pitchers Alex Wood and Mat Latos and five other players in a three-team deal that included 13 players and a draft pick.

Several media outlets reported the Dodgers acquired the left-handed Wood from Atlanta, along with top prospect Jose Peraza and pitchers Bronson Arroyo, Luis Avilan and Jim Johnson. Along with right-hander Latos, the Dodgers acquired first baseman Michael Morse from Miami.

The Braves received infielder Hector Olivera, left-hander Paco Rodriguez, right-hander Zack Bird and a 2016 competitive-balance draft pick from Miami.

The Marlins received minor-league righthanders Jeff Brigham, Victor Araujo and Kevin Guzman while shedding $18 million in Latos’ and Morse’s salaries.

The deal was nearly completed Wednesday, but it was put on hold until the players passed physical exams.

Cardinals: St. Louis picked up outfielder Brandon Moss from Cleveland for pitching prospect Rob Kaminsky, the Cardinals’ top draft pick in 2013. Moss was needed after Matt Holliday went on the disabled list with a right quadriceps injury.

Pirates: In a move to upgrade the bullpen, Pittsburgh acquired righthander Joakim Soria from Detroit for minor-league infielder JaCoby Jones. The deal came a few hours after the Pirates got reliever Joe Blanton from Kansas City for cash.

Athletics: After the trade of Tyler Clippard to the Mets, manager Bob Melvin said Edward Mujica will take over as the team’s closer. “He’s got the most experience doing it,” Melvin said.

Yankees: Outfielder Dustin Ackley was acquired from Seattle for right-hander Jose Ramirez and outfielder Ramon Flores. Also, New York right-hander Michael Pineda (forearm) went on the DL and was replaced Thursday by CC Sabathia.
