Seahawks wrap up Wilson

QB gets four-year extension with $60M guaranteed.

-

The Seattle Seahawks signed quarterback Russell Wilson to a four-year contract extension Friday, making him the second highest paid player in the NFL.

According to reports, the deal is worth $87.6 million and includes a $31 million signing bonus with $60 million in guarantees. Wilson was scheduled to make $1.54 million this season, the fourth and final year of his rookie contract.

The agreement ends an offseason of back-andforth between both sides.

The Seahawks’ training camp got underway Friday, which reportedly was the deadline Wilson gave the team to work out a new deal this year.

“I didn’t think it was personal. I knew it was business. At the end of the day, I’m happy to be a Seahawk,” Wilson said Friday. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s a blessing to be here on a championship-type team and the goal is to win the Super Bowl this year.”

The 26-year-old Wilson has led the Seahawks to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. The deal will keep Wilson in Seattle though the 2019 season.

Wilson’s new-money average is $21.9 million, making him the seventh quarterback to make more than $20 million per season. The Packers’ Aaron Rodgers tops the list, earning $22 million a year.

While Wilson and the Seahawks were celebrating the deal, there were a handful of other players expressing unhappiness with their contract status.

Defensive lineman Michael Bennett and middle linebacker Bobby Wagner said they considered holding out but decided to show and avoid paying a fine of up to $30,000 per day.

Safety Kam Chancellor is holding out, unhappy with his compensation for the contract he signed prior to the 2013 season.

Redskins: Outside linebacker Junior Galette signed a one-year contract days after being released by the Saints because of off-field issues. Galette’s agent, Alvin Keels, said the deal is for the veteran minimum.

Galette was cut Monday by the Saints following the release of a 2013 video that appears to show a physical altercation on a beach between Galette and a woman that involves a belt. The NFL is investigating the incident.

Meantime, second-year cornerback Bashaud Breeland was suspended one game by the NFL nearly a year after being cited for marijuana possession, then was carted off the field after being injured in practice. The extent of Breeland’s injury was not immediately known.

Buccaneers: Coach Lovie Smith named Jameis Winston as the team’s starting quarterback. Winston, the first overall pick in the draft, will work with the first team when camp begins today.

Giants: Reached a contract agreement with wide receiver James Jones, who is entering his ninth NFL season. Jones had 73 catches for 666 yards and six touchdowns with the Oakland Raiders in 2014.

Legal: The NFL and the players’ union asked a U.S. District Court on Friday to expedite a resolution on the lawsuit by Patriots quarterback Tom Brady over his four-game “Deflategate” suspension. Both sides filed a joint letter proposing a ruling be made by Sept. 4, six days before the Patriots’ season-opener. ... Florida prosecutors said they’ve dropped a battery charge against Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, who was accused of punching a boy in the face for using his beach chairs.
