Indians president going to Toronto

-

Cleveland Indians President Mark Shapiro is leaving the club after this season to run Toronto’s front office.

Shapiro, who has had several prominent roles in his 24 seasons with Cleveland, will become the Blue Jays’ next president and CEO. He said he’s taking on a “unique opportunity” with mixed emotions.

Shapiro will replace Toronto CEO Paul Beeston, who is retiring. The AL East-leading Blue Jays have been looking for a top executive for months and say they’ve landed one of the best in Shapiro.

“Mark is a seasoned baseball veteran, whose leadership, drive for excellence, and commitment to all aspects of the game is impressive. We have confidence that he is the right person to lead the Toronto Blue Jays into the future and build upon the franchise’s legacy,” Blue Jays Chairman Edward Rogers said.

Blue Jays: Team ownership said it would “love” to keep general manager Alex Anthopoulos and has been in discussions about extending his contract. His contract expires in October. Anthopoulos acquired MVP candidate Josh Donaldson in the offseason and traded for David Price and Troy Tulowitzki before the deadline. Toronto has gone 24-6 since the Tulowitzki trade to vault into first place.

Royals: Kansas City reached a deal to get outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Braves. Terms weren’t immediately disclosed. Gomes, 34, hit .221 with 22 RBIs in 195 Atlanta at-bats.

Cubs: Chicago acquired outfielder Austin Jackson from the Mariners for a player to be named. Jackson, 28, was hitting .272 with eight homers and 38 RBIs in 107 games this season. Because the deal was made before Sept. 1, Jackson will be eligible for the postseason if the Cubs get that far.

Orioles: Manny Machado started at shortstop for the first time in his major league career on Monday night. Machado played shortstop in the minors, but has been at third base since debuting with Baltimore in 2012.

Yankees: First baseman Mark Teixeira was sent back to New York for further tests on his bruised right shin.

Marlins: Outfielder Ichiro Suzuki’s double Sunday was hit No. 2,924 in the majors, all coming after he turned 27. He moved ahead of Sam Rice and now trails only Pete Rose (3,353) for most hits after reaching age 27.

Rays: Jeremy Hadley, 20, an outfielder for the rookie level Gulf Coast League Rays, was suspended 50 games after testing positive for an amphetamine.
