Djokovic reaches semifinals in Paris

Novak Djokovic saved set points in both sets to remain on course for his third straight Paris Masters title after beating fifth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 7-6 (3), 7-6 (8) in a hard-fought quarterfin­al on Friday. Chasing his 10th title of a brilliant season, the top-ranked Serb plays the winner of the last quarterfin­al between No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerlan­d and No. 7 Rafael Nadal of Spain.

Second-seeded Briton Andy Murray and No. 8 David Ferrer of Spain won earlier to set up a semifinal showdown. Murray beat 10th-seeded Richard Gasquet of France 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-3 and Ferrer, the 2012 champion, beat 13th-seeded American John Isner 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-1 after failing to serve out the match at 5-3, 40-15 up in the second set.

WTA Elite Trophy: Elina Svitolina advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Elite Trophy by beating second-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-3 in Zhuhai, China.

Top-seeded Venus Williams will play Roberta Vinci in today’s semifinals, while third-seeded Karolina Pliskova faces Svitolina.

Baseball: Second baseman Daniel Murphy has been given a $15.8 million qualifying offer by the Mets. The 30-yearold homered in a record six straight postseason games. ... Two pitchers received offers: Jeff Samardzija of the White Sox and Marco Estrada of Toronto. Players have until Nov. 13 to accept.

Soccer: Seattle forward Clint Dempsey was left off the U.S. roster for its opening qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup, but coach Jurgen Klinsmann included two players who could make their national team debuts: Portland midfielder Darlington Nagbe and New York defender Matt Miazga.
