First baseman/DH signed a two-year, $25M deal last year.

Adam LaRoche surprised the Chicago White Sox by telling them Tuesday he intends to retire, leaving $13 million on the table.

General manager Rick Hahn said LaRoche told his teammates in a clubhouse meeting and was asked to reconsider his decision, which Hahn characterized as a “personal decision.”

LaRoche, 36, signed a two-year deal for $25 million a year ago. But he hit just .207 with 12 homers in 2015. The first baseman/designated hitter hadn’t played since early this month due to back spasms.

LaRoche also played for the Nationals, Braves, Pirates, Diamondbacks and Red Sox. He had a career .260 average and 255 home runs.

Giants: Right-hander Johnny Cueto showed no signs of a concussion or serious injury after he was hit in the head by a line drive in Monday night’s 10-2 loss to Oakland. Manager Bruce Bochy said Cueto has a forehead bruise but was showing no signs of a concussion. Cueto was struck in the forehead by Billy Burns’ liner on his first pitch, knocking off his cap. The ball caromed into center field for a double. The Giants’ No. 2 starter and top winter acquisi- tion dropped to his knees briefly and was checked by trainers before remaining in the game and completing three innings.

Mets: Shortstop Ruben Tejada reportedly was placed on waivers, saving the Mets around $3 million. The Mets had explored trades for Tejada but apparently couldn’t find any partners. Tejada hit .261 with three homers, 28 RBIs and 36 runs last season. Tejada had his left leg fractured after a takeout slide by Chase Utley of the Dodgers in the playoffs last year.

Rockies: Veteran utility infielder Daniel Descalso will miss several weeks with a broken bone in his non-throwing hand. Descalso was hurt Friday when he was hit on the left hand by Tom Gorzelanny’s pitch in a win over Cleveland. Also, prospect Tyler Anderson will be out several weeks with a strained oblique.

Blue Jays: DH/1B Edwin Encarnacion will be shut down at least a week with a “minor oblique problem,” manager John Gibbons said. The two-time All-Star has missed more than two weeks recovering from an abscessed tooth that was pulled Feb. 28.

Astros: Catcher Max Stassi will miss six weeks after surgery to repair a broken left wrist.

Orioles: Chris Tillman didn’t make it out of the second inning in his spring debut. The former All-Star, who missed two weeks with a strained hip flexor, gave up five hits, walked three and struck out one.

Tigers: Justin Verlander allowed one hit and struck out five in four innings to extend his scoreless string to nine innings in a 10-6 win over Atlanta.
