Miami’s Kaaya, Berrios put on a show
QB throws for 345 yards, three TDs for Richt’s Canes.
It was a big day for quarterback Brad Kaaya (29 for 49, 345 yards, 3 TDs, INT) and receiver Braxton Berrios (8 receptions, 127 yards, TD) as the Green team, featuring Miami’s first-string offense, beat the Orange team (firststring defense) 24-7 in the annual spring game Saturday, the Hurricanes’ first under coach Mark Richt.
North Carolina: Early enrollees Jonathan Smith at linebacker and defensive backs Myles Wolfolk and Myles Dorn combined for 14 tackles during the spring game that put the offense and defense against each other in a scoring system based on points awarded on outcomes for each play. The offense won 74-70, but the defense allowed three touchdowns — only one TD toss by likely starting QB Mitch Trubisky — while grabbing four interceptions.
Ohio State: With just six starters returning, coach Urban Meyer needed to see how many of the young players would perform when playing full speed in the annual spring game — particularly quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Stephen Collier, one of whom will back up J.T. Barrett in the fall and likely succeed him when he moves on. Burrow made a solid case for himself. He was 14 for 23 for 196 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Gray squad to a 28-17 victory over the Scarlet team in front of a record spring game crowd of 100,189.
Notre Dame: DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire finished spring practice the same way they began, still trying to win the starting job. Kizer and Zaire both led their teams on touchdown drives. Kizer completed 10 of 17 passes for 113 yards, completing all four passes for 60 yards on the first touchdown drive. Zaire wasn’t quite as consistent, completing 6 of 15 passes for 120 yards.
Texas: Freshman quarterback Shane Buechele passed for 299 yards and two touchdowns and generally outplayed senior Tyrone Swoopes in a strong bid to seize the starting job as Texas unveiled its new up-tempo offense.
