Gwinnett dessert cafe fails

- By John Thompson For the AJC DIONNE KINCH FOR THE AJC

Employees at Cafe MangoSix, a coffee and dessert restaurant in Duluth, left unclean clothing over an open bag of sugar in dry storage.

They were also eating and drinking in the food prep area. Points were taken off because one employee washed hands without using soap, according to a recent Gwinnett County routine health inspection.

Cafe MangoSix, 2131 Pleasant Hill Road, scored 43/U, down from previous scores of 84/B and 87/B.

Points were taken off for other hand-washing violations. One of the employee hand sinks had no soap, and two others were being used to either wash or store dishes and equipment, according to the inspection report.

A drink mug and parts of an espresso machine were stored in one sink, while a whisk, sponge and sponge holder were in another sink. The inspector said clean dishes were upside down on a paper towel near the sink, indicating that the dishes had been washed in that sink.

In other code violations, mangoes were not washed before they were cut. The fruit was discarded.

Tapioca pearls for the boba teas were at the front drink prep area at room temperature. There were no time control documents and the food was discarded. Red bean paste in the prep area was also at room temperature and was moved to the freezer to cool down.

Tom McGowan wants something done about a sewer grate.

“The attached photo shows the sewer grate that’s been a problem for several years in Grant Park. It is on the roadway from Georgia Avenue to the zoo parking lot. The problem is that the curbstones leading up to it have moved in several inches past the sewer grate. People regularly hit the sewer as they hug the curve and have blown out both tires when they do. The fix required is to move the curbs back in line with the sewer grate,” he wrote.

Update- Atlanta

We got an update last week about an issue that was first reported last summer. A reader inquired about large metal plates on the bridge over the railroad tracks as you approach East Paces Ferry Road towards Lenox Square.

“The Department of Public Works is currently conducting repairs to the bridge at this location. Repairs to the bridge began on March 25 and are scheduled for completion, weather permitting, during the week of July 18,” said city officials. Update-Interstate 20

Earlier this month, we told you about Anita John’s frustration with Interstate 20.

“Interstate 20 east and west is in very bad shape from the Douglas County line to the Atlanta city area, with large potholes and road damage due to weather and volume of traffic. It is been like that since August, 2014 when I started going to Carrollton to my daughter’s college. Please do something,” she wrote. We heard back from the DOT.

“The Georgia Department of Transportation contractors will begin resurfacing I-20 eastbound and westbound as early as next week, weather permitting. Resurfacing will take place from Hill Street in Atlanta to Sweetwater Creek ( just after Thornton Road),” said DOT officials. Avondale Estates’ Willis Park reopens

After a seven-months renovation, and nearly five years planning process, Avondale Estates’ Willis Park reopened this week, with caveats. While the new playground equipment, pathways and pavilion are fully accessible, the playing fields remain off limits for another two-to four weeks so the sod can take hold.

This is likely the first major overhaul ever for the 3-acre, 92-year old park named for city founder George Willis. Renovation costs are roughly $650,000. A grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration are scheduled for 11 a.m.-1 p.m., May 14 at the park, 51 Dartmouth Avenue.
