Find fashionable artistic work through online sources

Taking a look at available sites.

- By Megan McDonough Washington Post

The internet has become a major source for affordable art, with digital sales steadily growing each year and online art retailers cropping up daily.

But finding and purchasing artwork via a monitor can prove daunting, especially if you don’t know where to look. So we scoured the Web and found a wide range of retailers that offer affordable art pieces in a variety of styles and media.

Here are a handful of our favorites: Etsy (etsy.com) Because of the sheer volume of work the site has to offer, the online marketplace Etsy is a great place for a novice art collector to start. There are plenty of sizes, styles and media to choose from, and a wealth of one-of-a-kind treasures, as long as you’re willing to do some mining.

The site is uncurated but lets users search for artwork using broad terms, such as landscape art, or more refined searches, such as aerial beach photography, with some pieces priced as low as $5. Popular with younger, independent artists, the site offers a massive variety of original paintings, vintage art, funky prints and cheap printables, which can be downloaded and printed anywhere at any time. 20x200 (20x200.com) This online art gallery sticks to the motto “It’s Art for Everyone” by offering limited-edition, museum-quality prints from $24 to $10,000. Established in 2007, the site features more than 300 photographs, illustrations, collages and other works, which can be narrowed by theme (examples include lovebirds, history buffs and wanderers) and custom-framed.

Rifle Paper Co. (riflepaperco.com)

The paper-goods company, best known for its playful stationery and wedding invitations, has added an archival print shop, showcasing artist Anna Bond’s bold, cheerful illustrations at $24 a sheet. For a fresh wall update, consider Bond’s “Travel the World” series, which features colorful, creative prints of famous cities around the globe, including London, Havana and Bali.

JHill Design ( jhilldesign. com)

Boston-based artist Jennifer Hill creates colorful travel posters and creative, custom map-based prints, with 5-by-7-inch prints starting at $10. Handcrafted works can also be personalized to showcase your favorite neighborhood or most recent marathon route, along with the marathon date, location and finish time.

Ideal Bookshelf (idealbookshelf.com)

You might not be able to judge a book by its cover, but you certainly judge a person by what’s on their bookshelf. Artist Jane Mount’s whimsical prints are a fun and creative spin on the classic, wellstocked bookshelf. Perfect for bibliophiles, her prints include colorful, hand-lettered book spines centered on one particular subject matter. There are more than 40 themes to choose from, including cooking, fashion and Tolkien. The featured pre-picked collections cost $34 a pop. Want to show off your favorite books or customize a painting for a fellow reader? The site also offers original works, starting at $40. Minted (minted.com) This site offers a wide range of fresh, modern prints and custom art pieces, such as a personalized family tree or pet portrait, for as little as $24. To make sure the art reflects community interests, the site crowdsources ideas for new features and has members vote on what new creative visions they would like to see from artists. Society6 (society6.com) This member-curated gallery offers a huge range of affordable and accessible art prints, mostly priced between $20 and $50, from hundreds of artists across the globe. It also has become a budding community for independent artists, who can apply for and earn creativity grants to produce new works.

DENY Designs (denydesigns.com)

The Denver-based company offers more than 9,000 art prints and ready-to-hang statement pieces beginning at $24. The site’s artwork can be sorted by color, theme, style or artist and purchased in a wide range of media, including duvet covers and cornhole sets.
