Padres flirt with obscure record

San Diego extends club mark, homers in 25th game in row.

The Padres equaled the 1998 Braves’ NL record streak of 25 games with at least one home run on Wednesday, beating the Blue Jays 8-4 on the strength of three homers. The 2002 Rangers set the all-time mark of 27 straight contests.

San Diego extended its club-record streak of games with at least one home run to an NL-tying 25 in Wednesday’s 8-4 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto.

The Padres tied the Braves’ NL mark, set in 1998.

It’s the longest run since the 2002 Rangers set a major league record by homering in 27 straight.

“Our lineup has a lot of talent,” said outfielder Alex Dickerson, who homered with Adam Rosales and Brett Wallace. “Every single guy is a threat to take you deep.”

Dickerson homered for the fourth time in four games to become the first Padres rookie to homer in four straight games.

■ Padres third baseman Yangervis Solarte was placed on the family leave list, meaning he will be out three to seven days. San Diego recalled utilityman Alexi Amarista and left-hander Buddy Baumann from TripleA El Paso.

Rangers: Texas acquired right-handed starter Lucas Harrell and left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez from the Braves for 2013 firstround pick Travis Demeritte, an infield prospect. Harrell, 31, is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts for the Braves. Alvarez was 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 16 relief appearances for the Braves.

Nationals: Bothered by vertigo-like symptoms for the past week, infielder Stephen Drew was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Drew has played just once in the past seven games because of an undiagnosed illness, and the team sent him back to Washington for further tests. Drew has been a valuable pinch-hitter this season, connecting for three homers off the bench.

■ Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth’s leadoff walk in the second inning Wednesday extended his streak of reaching base to 30 games — a career high and the longest current run in the majors.

White Sox: Second baseman Brett Lawrie (left hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 22, and infielder Carlos Sanchez was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.

Rockies: Left-hander Chris Rusin (strained left shoulder) was reinstated from the 15-day disabled and reliever Jason Motte was put on the 15-day DL with a right rotator cuff strain.

Dodgers: Outfielder Yasiel Puig sat out again Wednesday with an injured right hamstring. He hasn’t played since Friday, but isn’t on the disabled list.

Indians: After being on the road most of July because of Cleveland hosting the Republican National Convention, the Indians will play 18 of their next 23 at Progressive Field. They have more home games (37) the rest if the way than any team in the majors.

Reds: Cincinnati set an AT&T Park record with eight home runs in a three-game series at the Giants (the Marlins hit eight in a four-game series in July 2010).

Noteworthy: MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said more rule changes are needed to improve the pace of play, and one proposal under consideration is a limitation on relief pitching changes in an inning or a game. The majors shaved several minutes off the average game time last season, but games have been slightly longer in 2016.
