WellStar training for bilingual interpreters.

The internationally renowned medical interpreter program, Bridging the Gap, was developed by the Cross Cultural Health Care Program. The 40 hour training program gives bilingual speakers the opportunity to become vital to patient and health provider communication.

Bilingual individuals may also take the course to fulfill their 40 hour medical interpreter pre-requisite for National Certification. Upon the conclusion of Bridging the Gap, participants will be able to demonstrate concrete skills in medical interpretation and patient advocacy. Acceptance into the program is determined by an initial language skill assessment.

This timely update on Thursday, February 16, 2017, will feature information on the new federal regulations impacting the care and safety of long-term care facility residents, the additional scrutiny on hospice providers, as well as positive changes to rules governing the guardianship and conservatorship process.

Mr. Hurley will update the changes in healthcare policy during the State of Georgia 2016 legislative session as well as examine several legislative missed opportunities. In closing, he will examine Medicaid’s “look back” period and its impact on Medicaid qualification.

Conflicts of interest and determining decision-making capacity often create complex ethical dilemmas for case managers, social workers, and other practitioners working with older adults.

Competing interests of an older adult’s family can also find helping individuals making difficult decisions even more challenging. This presentation on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, will provide guidance and tools for assessing areas of concern when clinicians are confronted with ethical dilemmas. Ms. Humphrey will explain the difference between capacity and competency and provide guidelines for evaluation. She will also review an ethical decision-making model for practitioners to use when confronted with such dilemmas in clinical practice.

Every 67 seconds someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s, and one in three seniors will die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. The purpose of this activity is to review the basics of Alzheimer’s disease and then analyze the financial impact of the disease to families and employers as well as those affected by it. Knowing the options available and planning for the unexpected loss in functional and cognitive capacity is the best way for healthcare professionals to advise their patients and families.

The earlier you plan the more options are available. Dementia is difficult enough when there is a plan in place; dementia with no plan will leave families exhausted, stressed and broke.
