Engineers present Rogers Bridge design concepts

-

Duluth and Johns Creek residents participated in two meetings this week to view four design concepts for the Rogers Bridge pedestrian bridge. With community input, the joint city and county project will determine whether to replace or rehabilitate the existing Rogers Bridge over the Chattahoochee River.

Each design will take into account the environmental impacts, and determine the best way to create a working bike/pedestrian connection between Duluth and Johns Creek. The bridge will allow access to the planned 133-acre parkland under development in Johns Creek, and will allow Fulton County residents access to Rogers Bridge Park, the Chattapoochee Dog Park, and the future Phase III Western Gwinnett Bikeway currently under development by Gwinnett County.

Two of the designs on display incorporate the existing, rusting 228-foot long, pin-connected Pennsylvania Petit-type steel truss bridge that has been closed to vehicular traffic for approximately 40 years. The additional two designs completely remove the old bridge and replace it with either one that replicates the original design or one with a more graceful tied arch bridge.

Mayor calls for pedestrian safety task force

In response to citizens’ concerns over pedestrian safety, Peachtree Corners is forming a Pedestrian Safety Task Force to study ways to improve safety for walkers, runners and cyclists.

“We’ve heard from a number of our residents of their concerns about pedestrian safety in our city,” said Mayor Mike Mason. “We are asking for volunteers to help create a list of ideas that the city can use to improve in this area. We will ask the task force to develop a list of recommendations.”

Since Peachtree Corners was founded 4 1⁄2 years ago, over 20,000 feet of sidewalks have been added and future plans include 11 additional sidewalk projects. Two pedestrian crosswalks with rapid flashing beacons are also planned for 2017 and the city is adding streetlights to many of the main thoroughfares.

In addition, the city is planning an 11-mile multi-use trail that will wind through neighborhoods connecting to retail centers, restaurants and business parks throughout the city. As this trail is developed, the need for pedestrian safety, especially at high-traffic volume intersections, will be paramount.
