Tigers’ Cabrera on DL with groin strain

Replacement gets two hits; teammate hit in face by pitch.

The Detroit Tigers placed first baseman Miguel Cabrera on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right groin.

Cabrera was injured while diving for a ground ball in the sixth inning Friday at Minnesota. To fill his roster spot, the Tigers recalled catcher John Hicks from Triple-A Toledo, where he hit .424 in 10 games.

Hicks played first base Saturday and went 2 for 5 with a double and RBI single in the Tigers’ 5-4 victory over the Twins. His only other major league experience came in one game with the Tigers last season and 17 with Seattle in 2015. Before Saturday he was 3 for 34 in his career.

Tigers-Twins: Twins slugger Miguel Sano punched Tigers catcher James McCann during a bench-clearing scrap in the fifth inning. Two innings after Tigers outfielder JaCoby Jones was hit in the face by a pitch, Detroit starter Matthew Boyd threw behind Sano, starting the fracas. Sano and Boyd were ejected.

Jones took a 90-mph fastball from reliever Justin Haley to the mouth and was sent for a CT scan. Manager Brad Ausmus said Jones did not lose any teeth. After the game, Minnesota put Haley on the 10-day disabled list with right biceps tendinitis.

Blue Jays: Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki went on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. He left Friday’s game after taking third base on a wild pitch.

Red Sox: Second baseman Dustin Pedroia was not in the lineup Saturday after his left knee and ankle were hurt on a spikes-up slide by Baltimore’s Manny Machado on a force play Friday. Manager John Farrell was so angered that he called the league office, seeking clarification about the rule designed to protect infielders from late and aggressive slides. “Bottom line, if that slide is not deemed an illegal slide, we should just get rid of the rule,” Farrell said. Pedroia said Machado texted an apology.
