Browns lose ironman Thomas for season

Pro Bowl left tackle tears triceps, will have surgery today.

-

Numb from losing, the Cleveland Browns suffered perhaps their biggest loss yet — Joe Thomas won’t play again this season.

The 10-time Pro Bowl left tackle — and ironman — tore his left triceps Sunday against Tennessee, and an MRI on Monday confirmed the severity of an injury that has dealt another devastating blow to an already floundering franchise. The Browns are 0-7 this season and 1-22 in two seasons under coach Hue Jackson.

Thomas said he’ll have surgery today and will need 6 to 9 months to make a full recovery. Under contract for one more year, he said he’s been too focused on surgery to consider whether he’ll continue his career.

“I haven’t really thought about coming back yet,” he said. “I was playing at the top of my game.”

Thomas, 32, played 10,363 consecutive snaps before he was forced to leave the field on Sunday, ending what is believed to be the longest consecutive plays streak in NFL history.

“Heartbreaking,” rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer said after the Browns lost 12-9 in overtime. “A guy who has done everything right, consistently for years and years and years, and to see him go down, it hurts.”

Broncos: Sunday’s 21-0 loss to the Chargers snapped Denver’s 394-game scoring streak that dated to Nov. 30, 1992. It was the longest active streak in the NFL and second-longest in league history.

Colts: Rookie safety Malik Hooker will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee in Sunday’s loss.

Texans: Three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown, who has two years remaining on his contract, ended his holdout after missing the first six games. Brown’s salary for this season is $9.4 million, a big chunk of which he lost in his holdout. His 2018 salary is $9.75 million. It’s unclear if he’ll play Sunday at Seattle.

Dolphins: Matt Moore will start by default Thursday at Baltimore. Jay Cutler suffered multiple cracked ribs in Sunday’s win and is unlikely to be available, coach Adam Gase said. It’s possible Cutler will be unavailable for more than one game.

Cowboys: Kicker Dan Bailey is expected to be out a few weeks with the groin injury that sidelined him in the second quarter of Sunday’s win over the 49ers. Safety Jeff Heath filled in as the emergency kicker, making two of three extra points. The Cowboys reportedly are bringing in kickers Sam Irwin Hill, Mike Nugent and Jason Myers for tryouts.

■ Running back Ezekiel Elliott will play at least one more game before another ruling from a judge on his six-game suspension over domestic violence allegations. U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla turned down the NFL’s request for an expedited hearing on a preliminary injunction. She set one for Oct. 30, a day after Dallas visits Washington.

Steelers: The Steelers say they have no plans to trade disgruntled receiver Martavis Bryant, who reiterated his desire to be traded in a since-deleted Instagram post Sunday night. Bryant called in sick Monday, missing a mandatory day of work.

Giants: Coach Ben McAdoo is sticking with Eli Manning. McAdoo said the Giants’ 1-6 record is not grounds for handing the quarterback job to third-round draft pick Davis Webb so the team can evaluate him in regular-season action.

Late Sunday

(At) Patriots 23, Falcons 7: Tom Brady threw two TD passes, and Stephen Gostkowski kicked field goals of 29, 21 and 38 yards through the fog as New England beat Atlanta in a Super Bowl rematch.
