Police have arrested a man they say holed up inside a Marietta home after trying to steal a truck from a nearby home Wednesday.

Chuck McPhilamy, spokesman with Marietta police, said the man, who they haven’t identified, “talked his way into a home” on Springhollow Lane, just off Powder Springs Street Southwest and Bellemeade Drive Southwest.

A negotiator with the Marietta police SWAT team was able to get the man out of the home without incident, the spokesman said.

McPhilamy said the commotion started when a man who lives a block away from the standoff scene started up his truck and went back inside his home. When the man came out, the suspect was inside the truck trying to drive away. The man hopped into the bed of his own truck, broke out the back window and took back control of his truck, McPhilamy said. Sometime during all that, the suspect pulled out a knife and the victim called 911.

The suspect, who police believe lives in the area, ran a block away and talked his way into the home. Inside was a mother and children who “he may or may not have known,” McPhilamy said.

Police got the woman and her children out and surrounded the house, and the man came outside after a brief talk with negotiators.

“The goal for any of us at the end of the day is for all of us to go home safely, including the suspect,” McPhilamy said.

He said the carjacking victim who broke out the truck window refused medical treatment, and no one else was injured. McPhilamy said that the suspect could face charges such as attempted robbery and evading police, depending on what the investigation shows.
