Slumping Chiefs turn to Revis
Former Jets star hasn’t played in ’17; Taylor gets job back.
The Chiefs have signed veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis in their latest attempt to shore up their porous defensive backfield, though it is unclear when he’ll be ready to play.
The Chiefs announced the signing Wednesday, four days before they face the Bills.
Revis, who had been a free agent after playing for the Jets last season, is a seven-time Pro Bowler and at one point was widely considered the best cornerback in the league.
He had 29 interceptions over 10 seasons and won a Super Bowl with the Patriots.
The Chiefs have tried Terrence Mitchell, Kenneth Acker, Steven Nelson and Phillip Gaines at the cornerback spot opposite Marcus Peters this season.
Bills: Coach Sean McDer- mott reversed course, saying quarterback Tyrod Taylor will start at Kansas City on Sunday, a week after his decision to start rookie Nathan Peterman backfired.
McDermott called his decision to return to Taylor “the right thing for our team,” after Peterman threw five interceptions in a 54-24 loss at the Chargers.
Taylor, who is 20-18 in 2½ seasons in Buffalo, was benched after going 9 of 18 for 56 yards in a 47-10 loss to the Saints on Nov. 12.
Peterman is a fifth-round pick out of Pittsburgh who became the first quarterback to throw five interceptions in
the first half since the AFLNFL merger in 1970.
McDermott shook his head “No,” on Wednesday when asked if he had any regrets about starting Peterman.
Browns: Wide receiver Josh Gordon practiced with the team for the first time since the 2016 preseason. Gordon was conditionally reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell earlier this month after being suspended numerous times for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
The 26-year-old, who hasn’t played in a regular-sea- son game since the end of 2014, ran routes and caught passes during the segment of practice open to reporters. He has been suspended for Cleveland’s past 43 games and 53 of the past 58.
As long as he fulfills guide- lines established by Good- ell, Gordon will be eligible to play in Cleveland’s Dec. 3 game at the Chargers.
Patriots: Quarterback Tom Brady sat out practice with what the team says is an Achilles tendon injury. Brady has started all 10 games this season. He also hasn’t missed a game because of an injury since 2008.
The 40-year-old has thrown for 3,146 yards, 22 touchdowns and just two interceptions this season.
Tight end Rob Gronkow- ski (illness), receiver Chris Hogan (shoulder), center David Andrews (illness), offensive lineman Marcus
Cannon (ankle), and safety Patrick Chung (ankle) also missed practice.
49ers: San Francisco fans will continue to wait for a look at Jimmy Garoppolo.
Coach Kyle Shanahan announced that rookie C.J. Beathard will remain the team’s starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Seahawks.
Falcons: Running back Devonta Freeman remains in concussion protocol, threatening his status for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay.
Tevin Coleman would
again start if Freeman, who missed Monday’s win at Seat- tle, can’t return.
Texans: Placed rookie running back D’Onta Fore- man on injured reserve and
claimed veteran back Andre Ellington off waivers from Arizona. Foreman ruptured his left Achilles tendon Sunday during a touchdown run
against the Cardinals, coach Bill O’Brien confirmed.
Foreman rushed for 327 yards and two touchdowns on 78 carries as backup to Lamar Miller.
Lions: Claimed veteran pass rusher Dwight Freeney a day after he was released by the Seahawks. The 37-yearold is unlikely to play today
against the Vikings. Freeney had three sacks in four games with Seattle.
