New chair elected for Board of Education

During a special called meeting on Jan. 2, the Cobb County School District Board of Education held the annual vote to elect a new board chair and vice-chair. The new chair is Brad Wheeler, Post 7, and David Chastain, Post 4, is vice-chair.

Chastain served as the board chair in 2017 along with the 2017 Vice-Chair Scott Sweeney, Post 6.

Wheeler, who has served on the CCSD Board of Education since 2013, obtained a bachelor’s degree from Berry College in Health and Physical Education and a master’s degree from Jacksonville State University in School Administration. With a career in education spanning more than 30 years, Wheeler invested 25 years as a teacher and coach and served nine years in administration at McEachern High School and 17 years at Pebblebrook High School.

Chastain attended Brumby Elementary School, East Cobb Junior High School and Wheeler High School. A graduate of The University of Georgia Terry College of Business, Chastain works in the aeronautics industry.

CCSD is the second largest school system in Georgia and the 23rd largest in the nation.

Serving 113,000 students, CCSD has 112 schools, including 67 elementary schools, 25 middle schools, 16 high schools, one charter school, one special education center, one adult education center and one performance learning center. CAROLYN CUNNINGHAM FOR THE AJC
