Home Depot adding 1,200 employees for spring

The Home Depot, the largest Georgia-based company by sales, is hiring for the spring season.

The Atlanta-based hardware giant is adding 1,200 employees in the next few weeks with about half of them on the payroll for about 90 days and half likely to be hired for good.

So far, the company has grown without bumping up against the much-discussed shortage of skilled labor — for a variety of reasons, said spokesman Matthew Harrigan.

Many people are only looking for seasonal work. The company’s well-known brand is also a draw. Moreover, Home Depot’s hiring is not narrowly pitched to certain skills.

“We are not looking for a particular expertise. We are just looking for somebody to come in with a good attitude. We’re looking for people with a passion for customer service.”

That said, the company does see a more “competitive” labor market among employers hiring for retail, he said.

Home Depot has about 10,000 employees in 62 stores spread around metro Atlanta. The company has about 10,000 others in a call center, technology hug, human resources unit and a huge headquarters staff.

Open positions include sales, cashiers, operations and online order fulfillment, the company said.

College students, retirees and veterans were encouraged to apply, said Home Depot.

The company had sales of more than $94 billion in the past fiscal year, along with earnings of $8 billion. Home Depot has more than 400,000 employees.
