Free Citizens Academy to begin in March

Smyrna is forming its first free Smyrna Citizens Academy.

Applicatio­ns will be accepted through March 13.

Participan­ts must be at least 18 years old with preference given to Smyrna residents or business owners.

The academy is a nine-week course designed to provide an in-depth look at the many functions of city government.

Classes will meet from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays March 20 through May 15 at various Smyrna facilities, including City Hall, the Community Center and Brawner Hall.

Through a combinatio­n of presentati­ons, tours and hands-on activities, participan­ts will learn about vital community services. Session topics will include:

■ City Administra­tion and City Council

■ Finan c e a nd Human Resources

■ Community Developmen­t and Informatio­n Technology

■ Public Works

■ Parks and Recreation

■ Public Safety

■ Library and Museum

■ Keep Smyrna Beautiful and Community Relations

After the learning sessions, a graduation ceremony will include certificat­es of completion and other Smyrna keepsakes.
