WILL GWINNETT TRAIL SYSTEM GET BIGGER?
Gwinnett’s newest community improvement district was recently awarded funding to study one of the county’s most ambitious trails projects.
The Sugar loaf Community Improvement District will receive $100,000 from the Atlanta Regional Commission to conduct a “scoping study” for part of Gwinnett’s proposed “Loop Trail” — a greenway that would connect the Gwinnett Place area and nearby McDaniel Farm Park to the Infinite Energy Center, another park and the city of Suwanee’s own trail system.
“What’s exciting about this trail project is what it is connecting,” Brand Morgan, chairman of the Sugarloaf CID, said. “It will provide a connection for workers, residents and visitors in the CID to get to work, shopping, restaurants, and entertainment by walking or riding a bike.”
The stretch of the Loop Trail that will be studied by the CID — which is a group of business owners that agree to tax themselves to improve their area — is only part of the proposed project.
It would be part of a larger 16-mile loop that connects to the Western Gwinnett Bikeway, which would run along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
All of that is included in Gwinnett County’s proposed master trail plan, which is still being tweaked. The plan “envisions up to 320 miles of walking/biking trails throughout the county by 2040.”
