Tebow reassigned to minor-league camp

-

Tim Tebow’s time in the major leagues is over — for now. The Mets reassigned Tebow, their celebrity quarterback-turned-outfielder, to minor-league camp Tuesday, minutes after Tebow finished an 0-for-4, four-strikeout game against the Astros.

Tebow was upbeat and smiling after receiving the news, maintaining that his goal is to make it to the majors and that he feels he has made progress.

“It’s not like it’s a shock,” Tebow said of getting cut. “They were super honest the whole time. We have great relationships and conversations. ... So it’s all good.”

Tebow did not have a good showing in his first big-league spring training. It didn’t help that he sprained his left ankle early in camp during a run-in with a sprinkler head on a First Data Field back field.

Tebow had one hit and 11 strikeouts in 18 at-bats.

Meantime, the Mets announced that star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is sidelined with right wrist injury. The 32-year-old Cespedes was hurt swinging the bat in a game March 6. He was slated to play Tuesday but was scratched. New York had X-rays taken and was awaiting results.

Cespedes is starting the second season of a $110 million, four-year contract.

Mariners: Outfielder/ DH Nelson Cruz joined the growing list of injured players, leaving Tuesday’s Cactus League game with soreness in his right quadriceps. Second baseman Robinson Cano left Sunday’s game because of tightness in his left hamstring. Ace Felix Hernandez hasn’t pitched in a game since he was hit on the right forearm by a line drive Feb. 26.

Yankees: AL Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge will earn $622,300 as part of his one-year contract with New York. Judge, who led the AL with 52 home runs, is not eligible for salary arbitration until after the 2019 season.
