Mail carrier delivers lifesaving help to man

- By Steve Burns steve. burns@ ajc. com

Amanda Nalley has delivered mail on the same route in Forsyth County for 13 years. So when something seemed out of place with one of the residents, she took action.

Nalley nowis being credited with saving the 84- yearold Cumming man’s life, according to Channel 2 Action News.

“I appreciated that,” Rodney Garner told the news station from Northside Hospital- Forsyth.

Nalley’s “rescue” effffffffffffort began when she noticed that Garner’s mail was piling up.

“I left his mail on the doorknob,” she said. “Tuesday, when I came back, I knew something was wrong because the mail hadn’t been picked up.”

Also, she didn’t see Garner, who usually waved at her through the window when she made her rounds. So she checked with a neigh- bor and called 911.

Forsyth County deputies and emergency workers found Garner on his bedroom floor, where they think he had been for two days. He said he slipped while cleaning a floor.

“They said he might have had a heart attack or seizure,” she said. “He was not responding well. His eyes were open a little bit.

“They said if he had been there another hour, he would have passed away.”

Garner intends to thank Nalley in person for her attention.

“A man that won’t appreciate somebody for saving his life, that’s pretty darn sorry,” he said. Nalley didn’t feel heroic. “I love my job,” she said. “I love my customers. Whatever I can do, I just do it.”
