Ferrari reveals fierce new convertible

- By Olivia Olsen SPECIAL TO STATESMAN CARS

Formed initially in the town of Modena, Italy, just shy of 80 years ago, Enzo Ferrari paved the road leading to one of the most sought after vehicle brands in the world. Originally manufacturing cars for Alfa Romero’s racing division, Ferrari would later head Alfa Romero’s in-house racing division before going out on his own once more. While Ferrari was unable to produce a race car under his new brand for four years after leaving Alfa Romero due to a negotiation, he focused on crafting tools. In 1940, the Tipo 815 debuted, and the brand was set for success.

Now in 2018, the Ferrari name has presented the public with its latest endeavor, a hard-top convertible to put all others to shame.

Introduced during the manufacturer’s 70th anniversary (the celebration only took into account the brand’s years after the Ferrari 125 S was released), the 2018 Ferrari Portofino is primed as the successor to the popular and successful California T model. With immense power and impeccable Italian style, the brand new Portofino is a vehicle for those who refuse to grow old.

Breaking down design barriers, the Portofino induces pangs of desire and jealousy from anyone who lays eyes on it. The distinctive two-box fastback configuration is a first for the coupe-convertible class and gives the model an aggressive elegance unlike any other available hard-top.

Also present in the new designs is a focus on driver and passenger comfort, as both the front and rear seats were embedded with heavily researched technology and superior materials. Providing elevated support for the front seats, the Portofino is able to provide the rear seats with far more room than in previous models.

Of course the crown jewel of the Ferrari Portofino lies within, as the vehicle’s engine is as advanced and powerful as they come. The award-winning TwinTurbo V8 engine is a marvel to behold with a power output of 600 cv at 7500 rpm.The car also boasts the Ferrari zero turbo lag as the Portofino’s throttle response is under one second.

While the engine is the beating heart of the Portofino, providing drivers with top speeds of just over 198 miles per hour and an acceleration of zero to 62 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds, the model owes a great deal to its weight. Weighing over 125 pounds less than the California T, the Portofino’s chassis was completely redesigned to give a better performance overall.

Also featuring a 10.2 inch touchscreen infotainment display and a new wind deflector that prevents up to 30 percent more airflow within the cabin when the top is down, this car is one you’ll want to drive every day.

Combining a new surge of power with a design that ignites the senses, the all-new Ferrari Portofino is the convertible you’ve been dreaming about.
