Metro population growth third-largest in U.S.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell region is the ninth most populous metro area in the nation and it experience­d the third-largest growth over the last two years, a census report shows.

Between 2016 and 2017, the Atlanta region grew by 89,013 people to a total of 5.8 million. Here are the top 10 most populous metro areas in the nation for 2017:

■ New York-Newark-Jersey City, 20,320,876

■ Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, 13,353,907

■ Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, 9,533,040

■ Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, 7,399,662

■ Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, 6,892,427

■ Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, 6,216,589

■ Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Be a ch, 6,158,824

■ Philadelph­ia-Camden-Wilmington, 6,096,120

■ Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, 5,884,736

■ Boston-Cambridge-Newton, 4,836,531

And here are the top metro areas in the nation by population growth between 2016 and 2017:

■ Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, 146,238

■ Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, 94,417

■ Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, 89,013

■ Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, 88,772

■ Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, 65,908

Some other notable findings about Georgia:

■ Georgia’s Lumpkin County ranked ninth nationally among counties for the largest percentage growth between 2016 and 2017 at 4.3 percent, or 1,345 people.

■ The Jefferson, Ga., area ranked second nationally among “micropolit­an” areas for the largest percentage growth between 2016 and 2017 at 3.9 percent to a total of 67,519 people.
