Schools weighing four options for boundaries

- BILL BANKS FOR THE AJC

City Schools Decatur is weighing four options for reconfiguring its elementary school boundaries beginning in 2019-20. That year the five existing lower elementaries will be designated K through second grade, with the 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue (F.AVE) going 3rd grade through 5th grade. Additionally a new 3-5 will be built at Talley Street, with construction starting this spring.

In options B, C and D all K-2 schools keep their current boundaries. Only in option A does a small portion of Winnona Park move to Glennwood and another small number from Winnona transfers to Oakhurst.

Other highlights from the options:

■ In Option A: all of Clairemont and Glennwood and 76 percent of Winnona go to Talley, with all of Westchester, Oakhurst and 24 percent of Winnona to F.AVE.

■ Option B: 55 percent of Clairemont to Talley and 45 percent to F.AVE. All of Winnona to Talley.

■ Option C: 76 percent of Winnona to Talley and 24 percent to F.AVE. All of Westchester and Oakhurst to F.AVE, and all of Clairemont and Glennwood to Talley.

■ Option D: 69 percent of Winnona to Talley and 31 percent to F.AVE. Again, all of Westchester and Oakhurst to F.AVE and all of Clairemont and Glennwood to Talley.

The school board has final say on choosing an option or perhaps reconfiguring an option. It’s not known if these options will come before the board during its next regular meeting on April 17.
