Police said the arrest three weeks ago of a man at the Alabama prison where he’d worked nearly two decades puts behind bars a violent sexual predator whose alleged crimes span three states, including Georgia.

Officers gave some details Tuesday at a Sandy Springs news conference about the case against 48-year-old Matthew Moore.

Gathered were cops at all levels of law enforcement: from Homewood, Alabama (population 25,000) to Cobb and Fulton counties, all the way up to the FBI.

Police said Moore currently faces five sexual assault cases, and there are possibly other victims who have yet to come forward.

The first was an alleged 2008 attack in Homewood, the second was in Birmingham in 2010, then Cobb the same year, Sandy Springs in 2015 and possibly Jupiter, Florida, in 2018. The last is pending DNA confirmation.

Will Johnson, Sandy Springs’ lead detective on the case, explained that the DNA from many of the cases was in a federal system and matched the sample taken from Moore.

The prison where he worked is about 120 miles from Sandy Springs.

Johnson said Moore went on Craigslist and the now-defunct website Backpage asking for sex or massages.

In the Sandy Springs and Cobb cases, police said, he impersonated an officer.

In the Cobb case, county police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk said Moore was wearing some sort of badge when he approached the woman’s Akers Mill Road apartment in February 2010.

According to a Cobb police warrant filed Thursday, Moore forced his way into the woman’s apartment and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint.

Moore is currently in the Fulton County jail.

Anyone with information about Moore is asked to contact Detective Will Johnson at 770-551-3314.
