Falcons select cornerback in second round

Colorado’s Oliver can match up with bigger receivers in division.

FLOWERY BRANCH — The Falcons selected Colorado cornerback Isaiah Oliver in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft on Friday. He was the 58th pick overall. The Raiders selected Sam Houston State defensive tackle P.J. Hall with the 57th pick, an area of need for the Falcons.

Oliver, 6-feet-1 and 190 pounds, is essentiall­y a big replacemen­t for Jalen Collins, who was released last season.

Oliver will help the Falcons match up better with the big receivers in the NFC South like Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans and Carolina’s Devin Funchess.

The Falcons’ braintrust flew to Boulder, Colorado on owner

Arthur Blank’s private plane to hold a private workout for Oliver and safely Afolabi Laguda on March 14.

His father, Muhammad, played cornerback at Oregon and was a world-class decathlete.

He was selected in the ninth round of the 1992 NFL

draft by Denver and played five seasons in the NFL.

Chubb to Browns in second round

The Browns drafted Georgia running back Nick Chubb in the second round (No. 35 overall) on Friday night.

Chubb, 22, will join Duke Johnson and free-agent acquisitio­n Carlos Hyde in the backfield.

In four seasons at Georgia,

Chubb started 40 of the 47 games in which he appeared and ran 758 times for 4,769 yards (6.3 average) and 44 touchdowns to go along with 31 receptions for 361 yards and four touchdowns.

Last season, Chubb started all 15 games and rushed 223 times for 1,345 yards (6.0 average) and 15 touchdowns with four catches for 30 yards.
