Things to do in and around Atlanta today

- By Jill Vejnoska jvejnoska@ajc.com

Welcome to Memorial Day. Most important, it’s a day when we all should pause to honor the memory of those who died in service to this country. Fittingly, there are a number of ceremonies and other patriotic events taking place around metro Atlanta today, including Roswell Remembers and a wreath laying in Smyrna. For many of us, too, Memorial Day represents the unofficial official start of summer. Beyond the traditional holiday picnics and fireworks, here are some things-to-do this Monday that should help you get the best time of year off to a roaring start (and hey, if it’s picnics, and fireworks other Memorial Day stuff you’re after, we’ve got you covered here too.)

Alpharetta Arts Street Fest

The 14th annual version of this popular three-day event in the historic downtown area of Alpharetta. Check out more than ninety local and national artists working in everything from clay and glass to living plants and photography; chow down on tons of “street eats” and popular local restaurant fare in the al fresco food court and let the kids take part in hands-on activities. Monday’s live music lineup runs all day, wrapping up with the Last Chance Riders. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free. Milton Avenue and Main Street, Alpharetta. www.splashfestivals.com
