Golf: Troy Merritt shot a 5-under 67 to win the rain-delayed Barbasol Championship by a stroke over three others in Nicholasville, Ky. His second career PGA Tour win earned him a spot in next month’s PGA Championship. He finished with a 23-under 265.
NBA: Dallas re-signed 13-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, 40, who is set to become the first player in NBA history to play 21 consecutive seasons for the same franchise. His contract is for one year and $5 million.
Tennis: Roger Federer withdrewfromtheRogersCup in Toronto next month in order to be in peak condition for the U.S. Open. He is a twotime champion at the Rogers Cup, which starts Aug. 6.
■ The ATP is changing its Challenger Tour, making it easier for players to earn a living. Starting in 2019, draw sizes increase from 32 to 48 at all events in the second rung of men’s tennis. All players will earn prize money and get hotel accommodations.
Formula One: Plans for a new F1 race in Miami are on hold at least until 2020. The racing series had hoped for a Miami grand prix in 2019 but announced that negotiations have taken too long to get it on next year’s calendar.
MLB: The Rays put LHP Blake Snell on the 10-day DL (shoulder fatigue) . ... The Dodgers put infielder Justin Turner on the 10-day DL (strained groin) ... Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow has a broken bone in his hand and is likely out for the rest of the season, ESPN reported.
