Where Can I Find It?

- By Sabine Morrow

Spumoni ice cream, fresh cake yeast and some bad news about Pepperidge Farm party dinner rolls,

We’re trying to find spumoni ice cream. Until recently, we found it at our Kroger but it’s now gone. We’ve been to restaurants that serve it and we order it whenever we can. — William Sautter, Roswell

I checked with the manager at your Kroger and he told me that Kroger Deluxe spumoni ice cream was out of stock at the company’s warehouse and he didn’t know if more would arrive. When I reached out to the district office, I found that spumoni is a seasonal item. This year there were just over 7,000 cartons of the ice cream shipped and, by now, most of them have already been sold. You’ll have to wait until next year for more of the Kroger Deluxe spumoni ice cream. That doesn’t mean you’ll have to do without your favorite ice cream flavor, which teams various fruits and nuts with pistachio and chocolate ice creams. Greenwood Ice Cream, 4829 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, 770455-6166, has been distributing its frozen desserts to local eateries and ice cream parlors since 1952. Chances are, some of the spumoni ice cream you’ve enjoyed in restaurants might have been Greenwood’s. The company sells spumoni ice cream that comes in a gallon-and-a-half container for $26.95. That’s a lot of spumoni, but you won’t soon run out.

Please help us find fresh cake yeast for our homemade heirloom bread recipe. We could shop directly or order. — Joe LaCava, Cumming

Joe, around the holidays, when readers pull out their special recipes, I usually get a few requests for fresh active (compressed) yeast. Unlike dried granules, fresh yeast is highly perishable and is seldom found in local markets. With a refrigerated shelf life of about two weeks, it’s simply not practical for markets to stock this type of yeast. However, I found a couple of options for you. Locally, I called several bakeries but none of them used fresh yeast, so I tried pizzerias and got lucky on the first one, the New Sal’s Place, 111 W. Courthouse Square, Cumming, 770-887-3730. Sal’s acquired new owners about three months ago and, according to Brooklyn-born manager, Tony DiPietra, the restaurant offers true New York pizza made with fresh yeast, not dried. Call Tony and let him know you’d like to stop by and he’s happy to sell you some fresh yeast. If you find yourself in Atlanta, stop by Star Provisions, 1460 Ellsworth Industrial Blvd., Atlanta, 404-365-0410, and pick up some compressed yeast from the bakery. It’s priced at $3.50 per pound but you can buy as little as you need.

You can stop looking

Often ignored much of the year, pre-packaged dinner rolls play a big part during holiday gatherings. They’re pretty much out of mind until you need them, so you might not notice a specific type missing from your market until the last minute. Pepperidge Farm party dinner rolls are about half the size of the regular rolls, making them ideal for appetizer sliders. One reader used them for ham-and-cheese bites. Unfortunately, Pepperidge Farm has discontinued the little rolls. If it’s any consolation, the customer service rep will alert the Pepperidge Farm team that some readers would like to see the party rolls make a comeback. Having trouble finding a particular item?
