Powder Springs awards $3.7M park contract

- CAROLYN CUNNINGHAM FOR THE AJC

A contract for $3,668,500 was awarded by a 4-1 vote Monday by Powder Springs City Council for the downtown park. That sum excludes signage and site furnishings.

Continuing her opposition was Councilwoman Nancy Farmer, who has stated her concern about paying the city’s bonds and that the city’s millage rate had been increased from 8 to 9 mills.

JHC Corp. of Peachtree City was awarded the contract as the lowest of three bids.

In April 2018 for $95,471, the city demolished a commercial building at 4485 North Town Square — across from the Municipal Court building and Community Development building — to make way for the downtown park after spending about $1 million for its acquisition.

The new park will feature a bicycle trail head with links to the Silver Comet, Lucille and Wildhorse trails, an interactive water feature, a performance space, outdoor ping- pong tables, outdoor cafe tables and chairs, an earthen sitting berm and night lighting.
