THE HOT CORNER

-

1 BRAVES: In addition to seeking pitching in advance of Wednesday’s trade deadline, the Braves may also be looking for outfield help following Nick Markakis’ recent injury, USA Today reported. The Braves have called several teams since the right fielder was placed on the injured list Saturday with a left wrist fracture, according to the report.

2 METS: The Mets traded LHP Jason Vargas to the Phillies for Double-A catcher Austin Bossart. Vargas is 6-5 with a 4.01 ERA. He became expendable when the Mets acquired RHP Marcus Stroman from Toronto on Sunday. The Phillies were off Monday after losing two of three to the NL Eastleading Braves.

3 BREWERS: RHP Jordan Lyles is heading back to the Brewers, who are desperate for starting pitching as they try to repeat as NL Central champs. The Brewers acquired Lyles from the Pirates. He worked out of the bullpen for Milwaukee last fall, going 1-0 with a 3.31 ERA in 11 appearances.

4 BLUE JAYS: Toronto called up top prospect Bo Bichette about two hours before the first pitch against the Royals on Monday night. Bichette, son of longtime MLB outfielder Dante Bichette, is the third legacy player to join the Blue Jays’ roster this season, after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Cavan Biggio.

5 TWINS: Loek van Mil, who pitched parts of six seasons in the Twins system and at 7-foot-1 was the tallest player in pro baseball history, died at age 34. The native of the Netherlands got as far as Triple-A Rochester with the Twins. He was also in the Angels, Indians and Reds systems, and last played professionally in Australia. The Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Federation announced that he died “due to the consequences of a fatal accident.” In December, van Mil suffered head injuries during a hiking accident in Australia, according to MLB.com.
