THE HOT CORNER

-

1 DODGERS: Gavin Lux got a big cheer upon being introduced to the Dodger Stadium crowd for the first time. The noise grew even louder when the rookie stroked a single to center field in his major league debut Monday night. Lux went 2 for 5 and scored three runs in a 16-9 victory over the Rockies. The Dodgers’ top prospect, a 21-year-old from Wisconsin, started at second base after being called up earlier in the day, a move that has been highly anticipated since the Dodgers drafted him with the 20th overall pick in 2016.

2 RAYS: Major reinforcements may be on the way for wild-card chasing Tampa Bay: pitchers Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. Snell, an AL Cy Young Award winner, has been out since July 22 with bone chips in his throwing elbow that required surgery. He is set to throw batting practice or pitch in a minor league playoff game Saturday. Glasnow was 6-1 before being sidelined in mid-May by a strained right forearm. He could be back this weekend.

3 CUBS: All-Star 3B Kris Bryant was scatched from the lineup Tuesday because of right knee soreness. Knee trouble has been a recurring issue for him this summer. The 27-year-old is batting .227 with 40 strikeouts in his past 34 games.

4 YANKEES: Activated slugger Edwin Encarnacion from the injured list. He missed 30 games with a fractured right wrist after being hit by pitch from Boston reliever Josh Smith on Aug. 3. Encarnacion is among a major league record 29 players totaling 37 stints to hit the injured list this season for the Yankees. New York currently has 16 players on the IL.

5 UMPIRE INJURED: Home plate umpire Larry Vanover left Monday’s game between the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers after appearing to be hit on the right hand by a foul ball during Kike Hernandez’s at-bat in the bottom of the fifth inning at Dodger Stadium.
