THE HOT CORNER
YANKEES: Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton had five plate appearances in a simulated game Friday as he works to return this month from a knee injury. The slugger also worked out in right field at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa, Florida. He is expected to take part in another simulated game today. Stanton has been limited to nine games this year, hitting .290 with one home run and seven RBIs.
MARLINS: Brian Moran became the first player in major league history to make his debut on the mound facing his brother, striking out younger sibling Colin in Miami’s 10-7 win over the Pirates on Thursday. Brian, 30, fell behind 3-1 before throwing back-to-back sliders to strike out Colin looking. The 26-year-old Colin shouted toward the mound on his way back to the dugout.
CUBS: Closer Craig Kimbrel was put on the injured list with elbow inflammation on Thursday ahead of a big series against the Brewers. Kimbrel hasn’t pitched since allowing a three-run home run to Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich in a 4-0 loss Sunday. “He felt a little something pop up in that outing so just to be on the cautious side, we had an MRI done,” Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. “It showed everything is in place structurally. He just has a little inflammation.”
WHITE SOX: Manager Rick Renteria underwent surgery on his right rotator cuff Friday and will miss the weekend series against the visiting Angels. Renteria plans to return early next week. Bench coach Joe McEwing will run the team in Renteria’s absence.
