Three Gwinnett County public schools recently became the recipients of funds froman annual event with an out-of-this-world theme.
Vulcan Materials Co.’s Quarry Cr usher Run Atlanta 2019 raised $45,698 during the May 4 event at its quarry in Norcross. In 2016, the Quarry Crusher Run expanded to Vulcan quarries in other cities. Vulcan Materials Co. now hosts eight events in seven states, each race benefiting a local community partner.
Since the Atlanta event took place on “Star Wars Day” (May the Fourth), participants were encouraged to come as their favorite heroes or villains from the franchise.
Vulcan Materials Co., the nation’s largest producer of construction materials such as asphalt and readymixed concrete, presented proceeds from the run in August at the Gwinnett County Board of Education meeting. Recipients included Meadow creek Elementary School, Radloff Middle School and Meadowcreek High School.
The company also presented funds to Boys& Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta.
“This year’s race was a record year for the Atlanta Quarry Crusher Run held at Vulcan’s Norcross Quarry. Even with 30other races on the same day, we broke all the records fromthe previous years, with participants from14 states, an increased number of runners over the prior year and, most importantly, more than $45,000 raised for our be ne fifi ci ari es ,” said Carol Landrum, manager of community and government relations with Vulcan Materials Co.
“Education is an important thrust of Vulcan’s commitment to the communities in which we operate. Hosting the Quarry Crusher Run series allows us to share the Vulcan story with our communities. We are very proud to showcase the Norcross Quarry as well as the 52 employees who work there.”
Every Quarry Cr usher Run in the national series has a community partner, with Vulcan Materials donating race proceeds to these local organizations. Community partners for the Atlanta race provided volunteers who worked alongside Vulcan employees at the race.
