California pulls off stunner, tops No. 14 Washington 20-19

In a Pac-12 Conference opener for the schools, Greg Thomas kicked a 17-yard field goal with 8 seconds left Saturday in Seattle and California (2-0, 1-0 Pac-12) beat No. 14 Washington 20-19 in a game delayed more than 2½ hours by severe weather. Washington had taken a 19-17 lead with 2:05 left on Peyton Henry’s career-best 49-yard field goal.

OREGON: Justin Herbert threw for 310 yards and five TDs, and No. 16 Oregon (1-1) rebounded from its season-opening loss to Auburn with a 77-6 rout of Nevada (1-1).

UCF: Freshman QB Dillon Gabriel went 7 for 19 but threw TD passes of 57 and 74 yards as No. 18 Central Florida (2-0) extended its regular-season winning streak to 24 games with a 48-14 win over Florida Atlantic (0-2) on Saturday night. Gabriel made his first start after coming off the bench to throw three scoring passes in a season-opening rout of Florida A&M. Brandon Wimbush, who started the opener, was nursing an injury Saturday.

USC: Freshman Kedon Slovis passed for 377 yards and three TDs as the Trojans (2-0, 1-0 Pac-12) rolled to a 45-20 win over No. 23 Stanford (1-1, 1-1) on Saturday night.

NORTH CAROLINA: Sam Howell found Dazz Newsome just inside the end zone for the go-ahead TD with 1:01 left, lifting the Tar Heels (2-0, 1-0 ACC) to a second fourth-quarter comeback in as many weeks and a 28-25 win over Miami (0-2, 0-1).

MISSISSIPP­I: In the SEC opener for both teams, Mississipp­i (1-1) beat Arkansas 31-17 behind Matt Corral, who finished 16-of-24 passing for 246 yards, including a pair of touchdown passes to Elijah Moore. Scottie Phillips added scoring runs of 1 and 26 yards and finished with a game-high 143 yards rushing as the Rebels finished with 483 yards of offense. Arkansas fell to 1-1.
