Top 25 poll: Ohio State jumps to No. 3 behind Louisville, Kansas

Louisville and Kansas finally provided some consistenc­y to what has been a volatile Top 25 poll this season. Michigan State and North Carolina continued to tumble. The Cardinals solidified the No. 1 spot Monday after routing then-No. 4 Michigan and breezing past Pittsburgh. The Jayhawks stayed No. 2 after thumping Colorado. Ohio State jumped from sixth to third following a 74-49 rout of then-No. 7 North Carolina and a blowout of Penn State. Maryland dropped one spot to fourth despite continuing to win, while Michigan slid one spot to round out the top five after its first loss of the season vs. Louisville. Michigan State lost to Virginia Tech and Duke to drop from 11th to No. 16. North Carolina tumbled 10 spots to No. 17 after losses to Ohio State and Virginia.

Late Sunday

(At) No. 5 Virginia 56, No. 7 North Carolina 47: Roy Williams spoke calmly but his words said something else. “This is the most frustrated I’ve ever been,” the coach with three national championsh­ips in 17 years with the Tar Heels said Sunday. “I don’t think we’re playing basketball the way I want us to play.” Mamadi Diakite scored 12 points and the Cavs (8-1, 2-0 ACC) rebounded from a blowout loss to hand the Tar Heels (6-3, 0-1) a second straight sub-50point game, the first time since the 194748 season that the Tar Heels failed to reach 50 points in back-to-back games.

(At) No. 9 Gonzaga 83, No. 22 Washington 76: Killian Tillie had 15 points and the Bulldogs (10-1) held off the Huskies (7-2).

(At) No. 11 Michigan St. 77, Rutgers 65: Cassius Winston had 23 points and seven assists as the Spartans (6-3) beat the Scarlet Knights (6-3) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

(At) Iowa State 76, No. 16 Seton Hall 66: Tyrese Haliburton scored 17 points, George Conditt had a season-high 17 off the bench and the Cyclones upset the Pirates (6-3).

No. 19 Dayton 78, Saint Mary’s 68: Jalen Crutcher had a season-high 21 points in the Flyers’ win at the Jerry Colangelo Classic in Phoenix.
