High Museum closes exhibit early due to leak

‘Sally Mann’ was supposed to be on display for 6 more weeks.

Atlanta’s High Museum of Art announced Monday that it was immediately and permanently closing an exhibit due to a persistent leak.

“Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings” was supposed to be on display for six more weeks.

“While no artwork on display has been damaged, a recurring leak on the third floor of the Anne Cox Chambers Wing has impacted our ability to ensure that our high standards of preservation and climate stability can be maintained without interruption to this exhibition,” according to the museum’s website.

The High was the last stop for the traveling exhibit, which examines the photographer’s relationship to the South. It had been touring since March 2018.

The museum said in a release that it will provide a refund for those who purchased tickets in advance, hoping to see the exhibit.

“The decision to close the exhibition early was an extremely difficult one, which we do not take lightly,” the museum said in a statement. “We tried to explore every option, but regretfully, we were unable to resolve the issue without closing the galleries. Once we decided to close the exhibition, we needed to move swiftly and there was not time for advance warning.”

The exhibit will not be immediately replaced. Instead, the museum will use the next six weeks to address the leak.

Concurrent with the High exhibit, Jackson Fine Art has a separate exhibit featuring some of Mann’s work on display, titled “Remembered Light & Landscapes.” That show is on view until Dec. 21.
