1 BASEBALL:

The Chicago White Sox agreed to a $12 million, oneyear contract with veteran slugger Edwin Encarnació­n, a person familiar with the negotiatio­ns told The Associated Press on Wednesday night. Encarnació­n hit 34 home runs in 109 games for Seattle and the Yankees last season. New York declined an option for next season after he was limited by oblique problems down the stretch. Encarnació­n, turns 37 on Jan. 7, has eight straight seasons with more than 30 homers. He has 414 homers in 15 years with Cincinnati, Toronto, Cleveland, Seattle and New York.

2 PRO BASKETBALL:

The WNBA and the players’ union announced Thursday they have agreed to extend their labor agreement for two weeks as they continue to negotiate a new one. The current collective bargaining agreement was reached in 2014. It was supposed to run through the 2021 season, but the players decided to opt out of the deal after the 2019 season. In October, the two sides extended the deadline to Dec 31. “We are making substantia­l progress toward a new collective bargaining agreement which we expect to finalize soon,” the WNBA and players’ union said in a joint statement Thursday.

3 COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

Fabian White Jr. and Caleb Mills scored 19 points each to help Houston rally to a 75-71 win over No. 21 Washington in the title game of the Diamond Head Classic on Wednesday night in Honolulu. The Cougars (10-3) trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half but outscored the Huskies (10-3) 44-35 after halftime to win their fourth straight.

4 GOLF:

Jin Young Ko was selected South Korea’s top female athlete as part of the BMW Women’s Sports Awards last week. She is the second golfer to receive the honor. Inbee Park won in 2015.
